May 2021 - Botanical, flowers, garden
Hello there! This month’s theme is by me, Riikka Kovasin.
Last month I mentioned how the saying “April showers bring May flowers” inspired me to think about translucent layers. This month we are continuing with this saying, this time the latter part about the flowers. Spring is the time of sprouts, new beginnings and lush growth. So, if blooms and flowers are not your cup of tea, you can also be inspired by garden, growth and anything botanical.
The technique of this month is sgraffito. Sgraffito is a technique used in painting, pottery and wall décor where the top layer of color is scratched to reveal the color underneath thus creating a pattern. So, use scratching to reveal color, previous layers or to add texture in your make. Or interpret the technique more loosely and wipe off parts of a layer of acrylic paint, make scratchboard using gesso and metallic cardstock or go down the memory lane to kindergarten and use wax crayons to do layers and reveal the colors underneath by scratching.
I chose baby pink as this month’s color. Pale pink used to be a color I didn’t like at all, but since my two daughters were born, I’ve used it more and more – although I did dress my older one in pale blue when she was a baby. I thought pink would go nicely to the delicate emerging blooms. Please remember, you can decide how much of the color you use. It can be a whole background or just a little detail.
